Well to be up front, I'm a psychiatric nurse, I work in a psychiatric intensive care ward in the UK. Please don't let this stop you from talking to me.
I have major depression with psychosis. I'm on fistfuls of medications which have various side effects and of course I am now fat! I've tried recently to reduce my meds after being on high dose for 2 years, why do the 'professionals' never understand the importance of the fat thing?! How would they like it?
My head is a bit crazy. I'm paranoid, I have delusions and I have this repetitive chanting voice/thought in my head that grinds me down so much.
Here's the kicker. You'd think that being surrounded by mental health professionals would be a good thing? It's not. It's horrible and terrifying I am very passionate about the people in my care but as soon as my views differ from my bosses he brings up my illness. My colleagues are the same every time I get passionate or disagree with the majority I get the 'how are you feeling' or 'do you think you need to see your shrink' talk so I hide it. I let them believe I'm miraculously cured most of the time. But that all puts more pressure on mind. Makes me more paranoid, more reclusive, trapped in my own mind.
I hope I can be safe here. That I can be real. That I can stop hiding if only for brief periods. |

Welcome to MT! I hope you find safety and comfort here. I sure have. I hear you on the weight thing. My doctor kept me on Zyprexa for a year. I gained 100 pounds and developed diabetes. She kept saying the good outweighs the bad. NOT! I finally convinced her to take me off that dreaded med when I got diabetes and was tipping the scales 100 pounds heavier. I'm still working on losing that weight.
Glad you are here.
Brenda

You can definitely be yourself here as much as you feel like. I hear ya on the weight gain. I used to be on olanzapine and it made me gain 75 pounds in a year. Finally I went off it but haven't found anything that worked as well as it. 3 years later I'm still trying to lose the weight I gained. But there are meds that don't cause the weight gain. I had to really impress upon my pdoc how much the weight gain was effecting me both physically and emotionally and she agreed that we could try a different med. Welcome. |

Hi Patient Nurse,
You can definately let your hair down here.
PS- I think that being a Patient /nurse, gives you even more insight into pschiatry.
But of course, like you say, you are shot down.
But here, you can speak your mind and be supported. |

You can complain here all you want.
There are plenty of people who complain about things about their jobs but don't do it at work for basically the same reason you don't - it is not welcome there.
I'm not paranoid per se , but i am always in fear about being attacked in one way or another. My therapist helped me see that some (no, not all) of the people there were trying to help me learn my new job.
I know just a statement doesn't make these things go away, but i thought it was a good thing when i read that they know about your problem at work. I understand that you feel your statements at work are belittled as a product of your illness, and that its no fun to be dismissed like that. But IMO, at least you don't (it seems from what i read) don't have to worry about being found out. I know that kind of thing has driven me crazy, anyway.
Glad to see you have joined us! |

May I too welcome you here. I also reside in the UK. I live in the north east England you don't have to say where you are located.
I have been contributing here for almost six and a half years and would recommend this site to anyone who wants a safe refuge from every day living. I have a close friend who is a RMN . However she had to take early retirement from the NHS because she became alcoholic when here husband also a former RMN committed suicide. I nearly went in to the same profession many years ago... I have no regrets that I did not! However I hasten to add I am pleased that folk like you are doing such a difficult job in spite of same!
Good to have you aboard the good ship 'Hope' as I endearingly refer to My Therapy. We truly are a cosmopolitan site we have members from all over the world. The HQ., of MT is situated in Vancouver.
I look forward to getting to know you, David
