Hi Marybeth,I have been on Citalopram for about a year now.At the beginning I had problems with palpitations(for which I was given Propranol),sweating, tiredness, and insomnia(I still have the insomnia, but not as bad).My panic attacks also got worse for a couple of weeks. Then the side effect gradually started to decrease. This medication is working quite well on my low moods, but mind you it takes time before it kicks in,so unless it makes you really ill, don't give up during the first week.I have been on 40mg for most of the time,4 months ago it looked like I was going back to square one( I was under a lot of pressure for various reasons)and my gp increased the dose to 60mg and it started to get better again. Now I'm having bad days and good days,so it's a bit like a rollercoaster ride sometimes, but considering the fact that when I started I felt suicidal most days and had lots of panic attacks I guess it's a big change. The main problem with the meds at the moment is weight gain and I'm on and off temazepan for insomnia.I have migrains at times, but I'm not sure they are related to what I'm taking.I also had counseling,so I guess that helped as well.I hope this will be of any help.Hope you'll start to feel better soon.

Hello,
Can I just ask how bad the weight gain was with the citalopram? I have been put on it after prozac did not work for me...apparently this is the common route the doctors go down.
I thought it would be OK from reading the leaflet with the drugs, and i have felt no bad side effects yet, but then I saw on another webaite that the worst thing about this drug was the weight gain. How come this isn't even mentioned in the leaflet??
I am worried, I am not overweight at the moment but i am not skinny either. I can't really afford to put on any weight, and i haven't the energy to go to the gym to work it off either!

Hi Heather,I have actually stopped taking my meds about 3 weeks ago(against my doctor advice...bad,I know, but my headaches had worsened...).Anyway,about the weight gain,I put on about 12 kilos/2 stones in a year. The worst of the weight gain was when I switched to a higher dosage 50mg and then 60mg.I had lost 4 kilos since stopping. However I would advice you to check this with your gp,as I was also on sleeping tablets, the contraceptive pill and tyroxine.I did not go to the gym either which didn't help! Now I'm taking long walks and that might also contribute to the weight loss. The good side of this med is that it really helped my depression.
